Stairway Collection - 3 Spiral Designs

Square Spiral Stairway

The first spiral stairway details finished carpentry creating a wow factor on this square spiral stairway. White walls and spindles are compliments by stained and refinished wood stairs and handrails. This stairway is truly a work of art by Connaughton Construction. This unique design has a skylight at the bottom of the stairs designed to  let light in from the fourth floor down to the first floor. The stairway is in the middle of the townhouse, so bringing in light for this part of the house made a world of difference. This skylight was uncovered during reconstruction. We removed the frame, added tempered glass so people can walk on the glass.

Oval Spiral Stairway

This oval spiral stairway combines a traditional style design with ornate italian scroll design wrought iron railing. Pure decorative detail speaks  luxury divine. The elegant custom designed skylight at the top of the stairs permeates sunshine in, lighting up each step of the way up or down.

Round Spiral Stairway

This round spiral stairway, far right in image above, is luxury renovation. In The top image, you are looking down at a marble inlay design. The bottom picture is looking up at the same stairway, complimented by a plaster ceiling medallion. This type of Victorian design is found throughout most Boston brownstones. Those have have been restored to the old charm of the Victorian days. You could say this stairway begins and ends with beauty.

Luxury Home Design Trends - Amazing Views

Amazing Views

We’ve mentioned the importance of a good view already, but sometimes it isn’t the big windows or the terrace that makes the difference. It’s what you wake up to every day. An amazing view typically translates into a great location. Luxury home buyers are willing to spend big to get both.

Whether it’s the perfect location, an amazing view, a home theater or a game room that rivals a Boston theatre, luxury home owners know what they want. While oversize windows and wine rooms may be more common features, the one common thread is that luxury home buyers want their home to reflect their lifestyle and what they love.

Just when you think we’re done! Boston luxury home design trends 2014 list also include infinity pools, tennis courts, floor to ceiling windows, private movie theatres and home gyms.

Infinity Pools

Luxury home buyers want a relaxing escape from their busy lives, and that’s where infinity pools come in. Backyards become more like parks. Luxury homes near the oceanfront integrate infinity pools with the natural landscape of the ocean as the background. Feeling like one with nature.

Tennis Courts

Who needs a country club when you can have your very own tennis court? For tennis fans, having a tennis court in their backyard is a necessity. A private tennis court is a rare privilege and a favored amenity for luxury home buyers.

Floor to Ceiling Windows

Luxury home buyers buy property with incredible views or a beautiful landscape, and they want to capitalize on every bit of that having floor to ceiling windows installed. Large windows let in a lot of natural light and make spaces feel grander. Think of large windows like a canvas that sets the stage for the entire room. Nothing is grander than walking into a home and having a view of Boston or a panoramic view of the garden.

Private Movie Theatres

A theater may seem extravagant, but it’s just as common to a luxury home owner as the dining room. Home owners are likely to keep it stocked with their favorite candy, a popcorn machine and their favorite movies. It’s a great space for entertaining, especially for families. Cocktails are allowed and encouraged in your own theater.

Home Gyms

Money may not be able to buy happiness, but it can buy convenience. Convenience, that’s one thing luxury home buyers are willing to splurge on. Having a gym down the hall cuts down on a lot of excuses. A home gym also means you won’t have to stand in line for the next Glutes machine. Most luxury home buyers are often “recreation enthusiasts,” and that requires them to be physically fit.

Types of Reclaimed Wood Available

Berkshire Pine

Berkshire Pine Barn Siding - Raked - Dry Brushed

Berkshire Pine Barn Siding – Raked – Dry Brushed

Barn Siding as reclaimed wood can be found throughout New England as cladding on old barns. The preserved saw marks and fastener holes visible on this fiber make this species unique. Its raked finish shown is applied at the mill and is then dry brushed with white paint to highlight the original saw marks of the material.

Reclaimed Barn Siding will feature a random mix of naturally faded colors. Colors in grey or brown siding can range from dark to light gray or brown. Original Paint can range from saturated to very light faded color.

Hickory

Hickory is reclaimed wood from barn beams found in the midwest. Each Hickory plank is hand-selected for unique colors and features that can only be found in slow-growth wood that has been naturally aged. This material features wide variations in color, from nearly white to dark brown. There is a delicate balance of sound cracks, checking, wormholes and knots. It is the strongest North American commercial wood available.

New England Hemlock

New England Hemlock Reclaimed Wood Flooring from old barns and cabins

New England Hemlock – Bear Wood – Unfinished

New England Hemlock is reclaimed throughout the Northeast. It’s primarily in New England from old barns and cabins. It has a tendency to be very  grainy with a very pronounced knot structure. As the material weathers, the grain begins to lift; making it more vulnerable to the mill’s “Bear Wood” finishing process which further exposes the grain. Light checking exists in the fiber.

Oak

Oak is reclaimed from wood joists, rafters, granary boards, siding and floor boards in old barns and other wooden structures. Reclaimed Oak hardwood flooring is known for its strength, durability and resistance to wear. It is among our most popular flooring choices. It has warm earth tones, a tight knot structure, slight checking and varying grain patterns. Expect original saw marks, nail holes, sound cracks, checking and wormholes.

Discover how to create the perfect effect for your style.

For the lodge and farmhouse-style,  you might choose wide planks with worm holes and saw marks. This effect is very  popular. Unfinished wood goes well in the rustic lodge and farmhouse styles. Consider the New England hemlock shown above in the Types of Reclaimed Wood Available.

For more formal Colonial Revival homes or Victorian homes, antique woods with clear vertical grains and few character marks work well. The prefinished woods go well in the more formal looks.

For Contemporary spaces, a current trend is to whitewash antique oak. The characteristics of age, along with accessories, change the look.
